PM Environmental’s Regional Manager of Industrial Hygiene Services sits down with us to provide a glimpse into his role, as well as share some motivating advice.

Q: Tell us a little about your role and what you do. 

I work in a small group so I “wear a lot of hats”. Some days I’m in the office, some days in the field, some days remote. I manage a lot of industrial hygiene projects, particularly indoor air quality – asbestos, lead, mold, and radon. I also guide staff on scheduling, report reviews, budgeting, and overall project management.

Q: What’s on your to-do list?   

This changes every day. Some days I am writing proposals and meeting with customers, other days I am doing inspections or writing reports.

Q: How did you get started in the industry? 

When I was in high school, I read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. I remember that book really setting in, regarding exploitation of worker the horrible working conditions they went through. Unbeknownst to me, that would be a catalyst for my career.

After high school, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. I was going to Ferris State in Pre-Pharmacy; it seemed like an easy gig and made a lot of money. After I got into some of the chemistry classes, I realized it wasn’t for me.

When I was at Ferris, I got a flyer in the mail about the Environmental Health and Safety Program, and at that moment, I knew what I wanted to do.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working at PM? 

I like working on unique projects and facilitating new services. PM provides the flexibility and autonomy to be successfully on some exciting projects. It’s cool seeing obsolete buildings coming back to life working with redeveloping these communities. We are also working on some new health and safety training program for a few clients, which is exciting.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow in your footsteps?

I think it’s important to see the long game. PM has changed a lot since I have been here. I try to see the progress and growth they have made.

Q: What motivates you to work hard?

I think it’s something that is part of who you are. I find a large sense of purpose in the work I do. If you see the value in what you do, that’s what you keep working for.

Q: When you think of leadership, who has influenced you the most?

Mornings are sacred. If you have a bad morning, you will likely have a bad day. I get up around 5:30, let my dog outside, have coffee with my wife, enjoy the silence and plan the day.
